Weekly Updates
January 2019
Greetings,
I hope you were able to enjoy the three day weekend. Although it was very cold, it was great to see the sunshine. This week MAP testing will finish up. The students have been working hard and the results have been very positive overall. St. John School kicks off Catholic Schools Week with the 10:30 am Mass on January 27th. Please be on the lookout for more information about our Catholic School Week celebration.
I invite you to join us for the “Heart to Heart Adopt-A-Student – Give the Gift of Love” event on Saturday, February 9. It will be a fun night with dining, dancing, and entertainment. Please help us support this fun evening, and wonderful cause. This is a great way to celebrate an early Valentine’s Day!
The St.John middle school robotics team completed this weekend and turned in a fantastic performance. They were invited to attend the Create U.S. Open Robotics Championship because of their performance. This is an international event with only 140 teams invited. Please read more about the robotics team in the notes. The basketball teams played this weekend. Our 5th/6th grade team remains undefeated and the 7th/8th grade boys won. Our school is very proud of these students and their coaches.
God bless and take care, Dan Mardell
Here's What's New!!
Robotics News!
This past weekend our two middle school teams competed in Somerset against other middle and high school teams. Both teams made it into the qualifying rounds and decided to pair up. They made it all the way through to the quarter final rounds and were knocked out by the tournament champion pair (high school teams) at that point. Both teams’ skills score have improved and will likely qualify for the middle school state competition.
At the competition this weekend, one team was awarded the Judges Award for the competition. The other team was awarded the Excellence Award-Middle School. Upon receiving the Excellence Award, this team was invited by the REC Foundation to compete in our CREATE U.S. Open Robotics Championship for middle school in Iowa on April 4th-6th. This is an international event comprised of only 140 teams worldwide.
As a part of Catholic Schools week, we ask that each student bring can goods to church on Sunday, January 27th to support those in need in our community. The Amen House is asking for donations of cereal, rice, canned soups and peanut butter. Larry Oser, a parishioner, will have his truck in front of the church to collect all food donations and take them to the Amen House.
We will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week beginning this Sunday! If you need a copy of the agenda click here. We have many exciting events happening over the week.
Silent Auction Item Sneak Peek!!
Would you like to own a piece of history? During the renovation of St. Francis in 2017, several pieces of broken stain glass were removed and replaced. Some of the broken pieces have been made into a stain glass work of art by local artist, Frank Connor.
St. Francis de Sales was built in the 1800’s by the Dominicans. This one of a kind piece of art is valued at $350.00. It will be available at the silent auction during the Heart to Heart Adopt-A-Student Dinner and Dance on February 9th.
SS. Francis & John Parish and St. John School will be hosting a night of dining, dancing, and fun. The evening festivities include a concert by our own Hannah Staub, along with a raffle and silent auction. The theme of our night together is Heart to Heart: Adopt-a-Student - A Gift of Love. This event will be a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the spirit of giving so prevalent in our parish.
In addition, we will have the opportunity to celebrate a man who embodies this spirit of giving; a man who has given his life to serve others, and to nurture and hand on the Catholic faith through the mission of his priesthood and the catechesis of young Catholics for more than 50 years: Fr. Bob Nieberding.
Please come and celebrate with us on February 9th at Cardome Centre as we honor Fr. Bob, and join in a community celebration to support the vital mission of education and evangelization. Click here to download an order form for the dinner. Click here to download a raffle ticket order form. You can turn the forms in to the school or parish office with checks made payable to St. John School. Dinner tickets are $50 per person and raffle tickets are $20 each.

Dear Parents,
Our school will be participating in the SchoolStore program this year. This online program helps our school earn cash without students selling door-to-door, collecting money or delivering products. Over 400 merchants, including Best Buy, Target and WalMart, have joined together to offer up to 50% of sales to our school for shopping through SchoolStore.com.
To shop and support our school, simply go to www.schoolstore.com and select our school.
Participation is key in helping get the word out about our School Store. In January your child will come home with a parent packet requesting you to help them enter email addresses to friends and family. When you enter just 3 email addresses you'll receive a prize code your child can return the next day for a prize. Thank you for your families support of our school
