A Journey Through St. John School Catholic Education
This week begins Catholic Schools Week, an annual week-long celebration of Catholic education in the United States that has been celebrated since 1974. As principal of St. John School, I am grateful to the many people of Ss. Francis and John Catholic Parish for supporting Catholic education in our community. The people of the parish, and dedicated parents, past and present, make it possible for St. John School to thrive as a Catholic school and as a mission of the parish today.
St. John School was approved by the Diocese of Covington in 1957. The school began with an enrollment of forty students, and was staffed by two Benedictine Sisters. The Diocese closed the school in 1976 for financial reasons, but in 1985, Fr. Trimbur, then pastor, worked with parish committees to reestablish support for the school. In August of 1986, the school reopened with preschool and kindergarten, and added one grade per year in subsequent years. Since that time, various principals have worked tirelessly to keep the school going forward including Anne Marie Evans, Mary Anne Enoch, Gene Jones, and Kathy Boothe. Our history plays a vital role in this year’s Catholic Schools Week Theme.
This year’s theme is “Faith, Knowledge, and Service.” Our history teaches us that without the faith, knowledge, and service of our Church community over the years, St. John School would not exist. Faith in Jesus Christ sustains us all. It is in Christ and by His grace that the Church community supports the mission of evangelization through its many areas of outreach. St. John School continues this mission of the Church community at large, by providing an authentically Catholic education, by teaching children how to practice and witness the Catholic faith, and by serving others in the community through various service projects. Dedicated teachers, parents, and students continue to make St. John School a place where mind and spirit grow.
Please feel free to stop in and see St. John School in action!
God bless and take care,
Dan Mardell
