Principal's Corner
Greetings,
Wow! As I completed an early walk through of the classrooms this morning it was fantastic to see the teachers and students so engaged in learning activities. The students were definitely being challenged early on
this Monday morning. I had the opportunity to work with the students in the eighth grade last Friday on the states of matter and physical changes. We had some fun with dry ice and they had some great questions - especially about plasma! Also, I had the opportunity to listen to the eighth graders present their colony projects in social studies. They had some very interesting ideas and facts about how their colonies should be set up and governed. I truly feel blessed to work in a such great positive, Christ centered environment that has tremendously talented students and teachers.
GOOD NEWS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
St. John finished fourth in the PepsiCo Recycle Rally. With that finish our school earned a check for $2,000 dollars. I would like to thank Mr. Bill Hulette and all the Recycle team for their hard work. It takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to run this program. The following was sent by the PepsiCo Recycling Rally to our recycling team:
" By participating in the Recycle Rally, your hard work not only benefits your school and community: your diligence and commitment to recycling directly benefit the disabled veterans and our planet. We commend your tremendous determination! "
What a fantastic way to be good stewards of God's earth! Thanks to everyone for labeling the number of cans and bottles in the bag. It makes it so much easier for the adults and students to count. Please support our recycle kick-off and shoe collection for the Watershed Project.
God bless and take care,
Dan Mardell

Middle School Service Project
Don't forget to bring in your shoes! The students will be collecting shoes to donate to WaterStep. WaterStep will then use these shoes to sell to make money to dig wells and send waterballs to people who do not currently have access to safe drinking water. Shoes that are unable to be sold will be recycled! Any shoes can be used: old lawn mowing shoes, high heels, outgrow shoes, shoes that aren't comfortable, or shoes you just don't use anymore! The 6th, 7th, 8th grade students will have a container at the entrance of the elementary building, the 3rd/4th grade building and the 5/8th grade building. Shoes may be dropped into the boxes labelled "WaterStep" anytime before school. Collection will end on Tuesday, September 30. Students have learned about the organization, how they bring water to thirsty people, how waterballs help, and how water is needed during emergencies. They have learned about the water crisis worldwide and in the United States, but they have also learned how they can be part of the solution! The students are excited about giving drink to the thirsty! To learn more, check out www.waterstep.org/

Lastly, we will not be hosting a fundamentals clinic for the younger teams this year. We are encouraging our students to get involved with the Faith First program run by Christ the King. They teach the basics we are looking for while providing the competition that was lacking in our program so we feel this is a great way to get our younger students involved and give them an opportunity to get to know the students they will be playing against when they get to 5th grade.
Georgetown College Math Circle for elementary students, registration now open
Registration is now open for the fall 2014 Georgetown College Math Circle (GCMC) program for fifth-grade through eighth-grade students residing in the central Kentucky counties of Bourbon, Fayette, and Scott who hold a strong interest in mathematics and are eager to learn more. Free to attendees, math circles are group meetings led by mathematical scientists who, in engaging and interactive ways, share their world of mathematics with pre-college students. The goal is to get students excited about mathematics in a friendly, relaxed, non-threatening environment. Beginning October 19, Circles will meet Sunday afternoons from 2:30 to 3:45 on campus in Asher Science Center, which houses the College's Natural and Life Sciences Division (Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Departments). The six week program continues through November 23.
