Principal's Corner
Greetings,
I would like to congratulate the St. John students for their help with the school Mass on Sunday. The parishioners were very appreciative and complimentary of all the students. Also on Sunday, it was noted in the bulletin and by Father Linh how important it is to help those in need. Our students have been very engaged in this mission. During Lent, they collected over $225 for the Gather the Fragments and over $1100 with the Lenten rice bowl collection. Way to go St. John School!
Friday night was "Movie Night" at the barn. It included hot dogs, chips, drink, smores, a movie chosen by the students, and lots of room to run! They had great weather and a large crowd. It was hard to tell who was enjoying themselves more, the kids or the adults! Hats off to Mr. Crump and his homemade marshmellow rotisserie. Word was he could cook at least a dozen marshmellows at a time and they were perfect. Thanks to all those who organized and set up this fun night!
Please spread the word about all the wonderful things happening at our school. Word of mouth by our parents is our best recruiting tool. Thank you for all your help and support of our school.
God bless and take care,
Dan Mardell

Vex IQ robot competition
St. John 5th grade students participated in the VEX IQ State Championship at the UK Student Center hosted by Lockheed Martin and Kentucky Project Lead the Way. This was the first year of this particular competition and 70 students from 12 schools participated. There were 22 teams total. The final scoring was based on being paired with another team and performing the contest task. As I recall, I believe our pairing was ranked 5th out of the 11. Keep in mind, many of the other teams participated in other competitions and have been working with VEX a lot longer than our students (in some cases all year not to mention their advisors had actually done this before...we were all new to this). In 10 days our team built a robot, troubleshot numerous issues, and developed programs to run the robot autonomously. From the time the team showed up until the last contest, our team strategized, modified, and continued to work hard. I cannot stress enough how proud I was with their efforts. I think the team learned a lot and had a ton of fun...I know I did. I will also point out that it was another example of the great families we have at St. John's. Each team member had a parent there and they were as engaged as the students. Thanks to Mr. Bilotta who bought pizza for everyone for lunch. As a school we have a lot to be proud of and we should be very proud of this trendsetting group who represented us skillfully and professionally. I left our team with a final task to assist the group or groups next year who will compete. The competition next year looks quite challenging but I know our students will be up to the task. Go Saints! - Roy Sturgill
