We continue to make progress on filling the few open positions. Shared last week with the staff and the incoming First Grade families, we are pleased to announce that Mrs. Teresa Hayden will be joining the SJS team this upcoming year as our First Grade teacher. Those of you that have been around St. John School will be familiar with Mrs. Hayden as she was the 5th grade teacher for several years after having subbed for several grades the year prior to joining the staff full time in 2012. After her time at St. John School, she spent the last 8 years working with primary grades specializing in literacy programs and teaching reading and math in small group settings at a local elementary school. All of her adult children attended St. John School through the years and she is so excited to be able to come back here to be a part of our successful team! She will be working this summer to get her classroom setup and meeting with Ms. Graves and Ms. Burns on the UFLI literacy program that worked so well for us this past year. Please help us in extending her a warm welcome!
Next, Mrs. Jillian Gerardo will be moving to full-time as an Interventionist working with Mrs. Bilotta this year. Mrs. Gerardo worked with us part-time last year helping Mrs. Bilotta with elementary and middle school students with great success. This year will see her take on more students and responsibilities as we continue to expand our intervention and enrichment services here at St. John School. She has proven to be a great asset to the program and we are excited to have her here full time with us.
Lastly, in addition to teaching and running an incredible Art Program, Mrs. Jansen will be the new Elementary Technology Teacher. Her background in science, her experience with robotics, and her creativity will help us to expand the technology offered to our elementary students to include more STEM-based and project-based activities. We feel this will complement the standard keyboarding and Google classroom familiarity activities and help foster more critical thinking and problem-solving skills at an early age, setting the students up for success as they eventually transition to middle school. We are so lucky to have Mrs. Jansen here with us!
The next update will have additional hirings and placements (so stay tuned). This week I will be attending the principals retreat. This 2 day event is being held in Lexington this year, and includes professional development from Notre Dame.
Please be mindful that some of you have items that your students did not pick up. The office summer hours are listed below. Feel free to come by and pick up those items left behind.
The best time of the year has arrived once again! School is ending, days are getting longer and warmer, summer vacations are starting up, and ............. CROSS COUNTRY IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!! That's right... in a short time, we will start official cross country practices for the St John Cross Country team! Lace up your shoes and mark your calendar: BROOKING PARK, by the big playground, 6 pm, on Monday, July 22nd, will be the FIRST PRACTICE. We will practice Monday thru Thursday from 6 PM- 7:00 PM. All you need is a great attitude, a willingness to try your best to improve, a pair of running shoes, and some water!
Anyone from 1st-8th grade can be a part of the team. If you have never run before, no fear; this is a great way to spend time with your friends, meet new teammates, and you will get stronger and stronger as a runner as you go through the year. Returning runners: I am looking forward to seeing everyone again and all of you developing into leaders of this team. The beginning of June is a great time for EVERYONE to start doing some running and getting some "miles on your legs." Coach Meghan is doing the Running Club on Tuesdays and Thursday at the park again starting in June; this is a super way to get started. Returning middle schoolers: it would be great to work yourselves up to running 4-5 times a week, averaging 3-4 miles per day by the time practice starts. Younger folks: trying to run 2-3 times per week, getting up to 1 - 1.5 miles , would be awesome! Remember: always run in a safe spot and always make sure your parents or someone know where you are at!
The more harriers, the better! Get your fellow classmates to come out and give cross country a try! It is a wonderful combination of a team sport with good individual goals! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get ahold of me at 606-669-1230 OR [email protected]. I'm looking forward to the season -- Go Saints! Enjoy the start of your summers!"
Tryout out times have been moved to 6:30pm - 8:00pm. The parents meeting will be held after tryouts.
