Greetings,
As my time as principal winds down, I am very excited about the new beginnings for St. John Catholic School at Cardome. I would like to thank everyone at St. John Parish and School for their generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure that has continued to make the school a fantastic place where the students grow not only academically, but also spiritually. God has truly blessed me with the opportunity to work in a Catholic environment with Fr. Linh, a very talented staff, wonderful students and parents, and a supportive parish. Thank you for a great eight years as principal at St. John Catholic School.
God bless and take care,
Dan Mardell
Greetings to all the families of our St. John School community,
Well, I have been in my role in an official capacity since June 1 (having shadowed Mr. Mardell for a couple of months) and while I am still not sitting at Mr. Mardell’s desk, he did feel comfortable enough to leave me in charge while he took a much needed and well-deserved vacation!
I wanted to take this opportunity to address a few questions that have been asked during the transition process since January. Please take the time to read through the Q&A here and as always, please feel free to reach out to the school should you have any concerns.
Enjoy your summer and I cannot wait to see you all back this fall in our new home at Cardome.
Peace,
Brent Mayer

As the summer heats up, it’s time to start thinking about being a part of the St. John cross country team for this upcoming school year!! Cross country is a fun team sport that challenges you individually to be the best you can be! If you have never done it before, come out and give it a try! Returning runners: talk to your fellow classmates and encourage them to be a harrier with you! All it takes is a pair of running shoes, a good attitude, and a willingness to try hard!
Returning runners: It’s time to get out there and start putting a few miles on those legs! Give me a shout if you would like some suggestions on how to do this.
Practice will officially begin on Monday, July 26th, at 6 PM at Brooking Park next to the big playground where we have met in years past. We will have a short parents’ meeting at the beginning of that practice to go over things for the season. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 606-669-1230.
I hope to see a lot of veteran and new faces on July 26th! I’m looking forward to a fun and rewarding season! Coach Todd Reinhart

You may or may not be aware of Nothing But Treble, a wonderful summer choral music camp for children ages 7-13, which has been running for several years now. Nothing But Treble was founded by Caitlin Flemm, a choral exemplar scholar at Lexington Catholic High School, the summer after her freshman year. Caitlin is now a junior choral music education major at the University of Kentucky, co-president of the UK Women’s Choir, and coach of the women’s acapella group, Paws and Listen. Though our amazing camp was not able to meet last summer, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are back full-force this year and ready to sing!
NBT will be held this year from July 26 to July 30 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 2800 Tates Creek Rd., 40502. Although the venue is different this time, all of our fun traditions remain, and we are so very eager to sing again!!
I hope that you will share our flyer and the contents of this email with your student body, parents, and other stakeholders, especially with anyone who has a strong interest in choral / vocal music.
In order to register for this year’s event, parents should visit our website, nbtchoir.wixsite.com/website. We are also here for you, to answer any questions you may have, at [email protected].

Important Lunch Information for the 2021-2022 School year
School breakfast and lunch will be free for all students for the 2021-22 school year. This takes the burden off of families while they continue to recover from the pandemic. We still need our families to apply for free/reducded lunches if applicable. These applications affect receipt of the P-EBT cards the government has been sending out as well as grant money the school recieves from the state.

“The family, is so to speak, the domestic church.” (Lumen Gentium #11)
We are excited to announce that we have partnered with Good Shepherd to bring CHRIST IN MY HOME Ministry to SSFJ! Each week, a short video (no more than 10 minutes!) will be sent via email and posted on our SSFJ website. The videos will help you prepare for the following week's Gospel along with practical ideas for building your "domestic church". It is our hope that you will set aside a time to view the video as a family and invite Christ in to your everyday living!
Videos and discussion questions will be emailed out on Sunday afternoons and posted on the SSFJ Facebook Page & the SSFJ Website.
