At St. John School we often hear about the struggles we face or things we are trying to improve. Many times we forget to talk about many of the blessings and wonderful things that go on at our school. Following is a letter a parent that captures what St. John is all about:
Hello All-
I wanted to take a moment to reach out to you regarding the 7th and 8th grade basketball team coaches, Coach Mike and Coach David, and the entire team. This past fall, Kaden decided he wanted to play basketball even though he had never played a second of organized basketball and could barely dribble a ball. Naturally, Shannon and I were excited that he wanted to play, but several concerns came along with it. Would the other kids be mean towards him because he wasn’t going to be as good as them? Would the coaches be frustrated by having to play a kid who would most likely hurt the team while he was on the floor? Those are just two of the concerns that immediately popped into our heads. I’m sure every parent has similar concerns when their kid starts playing any sport. However, those concerns typically happen when they start playing at 6 or 7 years old and not 13.
I’m saying all that because we want you to know how unbelievably great Coach Mike and Coach David have been to Kaden. We really can’t express how appreciative we are for how they have worked with him. Both of them are consistently coaching and talking to Kaden on the bench explaining the game to him. When Kaden does go into the game, one of them are on the sideline directing him to the spot he needs to be. Going beyond that, it’s not uncommon for them to go out of their way to run plays trying to get Kaden the opportunity to take a shot. Honestly, there have been a few times during the games that I’ve had to fight back tears because their encouragement and genuine care towards Kaden has meant so much to me and Shannon.
I also want to point out the great group of teammates he has. Again, one of our biggest fears was how the kids on the team would be towards Kaden. They have always been good classmates to Kaden, but things can be a little different when you are competing to win. Well, any concern we had was quickly erased because they have been nothing but great to Kaden. Each of them are constantly giving him high fives, slapping him on the back, encouraging him, and typically going out of their way to pass him the ball. It’s very touching to see a group of 12 and 13-year-olds putting themselves to the side to give someone else, who might be less talented, an opportunity to succeed. While everyone wants to win, things like that matters much more than the final score.
What initially started with a lot of apprehension and concerns, ended up being one of the best experiences for all of us. As a dad, who loves sports, I (selfishly) have had the opportunity to see him play a game that I never thought I’d get to experience. Much more important than that has been the experience Kaden has had. Shannon and I can say with full confidence that he has had the time of his life just being a part of the team. He has absolutely loved it. We can also say with full confidence that those feelings wouldn’t have been as strong without the support, encouragement, and true care, shown by Coach Mike, Coach David, and each member of the St. John 7th and 8th grade team. They’ll probably never know how much we appreciate how they've treated Kaden and the experience they helped provide him over the past few months. Feel free to share this with whoever you wish. It's important for others to know the great work these coaches are doing, as well as the character of the boys on the team.
Sincerely,
Shannon and Patrick Fox
God bless and take care,
Dan Mardell
